Musing Mondays (hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading) asks you to muse about one of the following each week…
• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
My local library is in trouble! The Bangor Public Library is in desperate need of a new roof. The current copper roof is 90 years old and has been patched several times. The cost of replacing the roof is estimated at $3,000,000!!
But, I do have a love of historic buildings. I do have a sister that is a librarian (in another state, just to make sure people don’t think I’m posting this just to support her library). And, finally, I do believe that libraries are in integral part of a vibrant community.
To hear that ceilings are falling in, books are being ruined and sections of the building have to be closed to the public, is disheartening.
All of that said, my employer has graciously agreed to be a collection point for “Copper for Change”, a fundraiser spearheaded by Zone Radio Corporation (Stephen King‘s radio stations). We have a collection jug on our front counter and our customers have been very generous with their loose change. But, I would love to have some of my readers here give to the cause. You can do so by clicking on the link above and then clicking on the “Donate” button. Thanks in advance if you give!
Now, just a sentence or two about the Kings…
Stephen King is one of the most famous authors of our time. We all know this. But, many people don’t know how generous he and his wife, Tabitha, are in our community and across the country. Not only have they pledged $3,000,000 toward the BPL renovation project — beyond the roof, the BPL is planning other renovations, totaling $9,000,000 — they recently donated $5,000 to the Poe Memorial in Boston; they donated $120,000 to help Mainers heat their homes (and his radio stations do a fundraiser each year for this cause); and much more, as Stephen points out in his “Tax Me…” article.
“My wife and I give away roughly $4 million a year to libraries, local fire departments that need updated lifesaving equipment (Jaws of Life tools are always a popular request), schools, and a scattering of organizations that underwrite the arts.”
Politics in the above article aside, the Kings are amazingly generous with their fame, wealth, time, etc.
Thanks for reading my Musing this Monday!
Until next week…
