This got me musing about past “book to big/small screen” adaptations. Some really good (Killer Angels to Gettysburg) and some really bad (The Stand to ABC’s The Stand).
It really bothers me when a producer/director claim that they will be true to the book and then it strays in unimaginable ways in the first few minutes. It ruins the rest of the show for me. What makes this television event different, for me, is that there were no bones made about the fact that the 13-part series would depart from the original book. From the very beginning, Stephen King and the producers/directors of the series have said that some things would be the same, but a lot would be different.
For example, the book takes place over just a few days. The series will take place over a longer period — given the creative connection to “Lost”, hopefully a lot, lot, lot longer. For those who have read the book, you know that there are certain…ummm…proclivities of Big Jim’s son that would not play well on broadcast TV. And I think they will have to tame the violence in the very beginning of the book. The graphic descriptions of the individual deaths might be a little much for a majority the TV audience.
I am excited for tonight and hope you have already enjoyed the book and like the TV show as well.
Let me know what you think of both in the comments.
